Angola and São Tomé and Príncipe
Abstract
Prior to Portuguese colonial rule, Angola was governed by tribal kingdoms with traditional religious practices that predisposed them to Christianity. Portuguese colonization, beginning in 1482, introduced Roman Catholicism, while Protestant missions arrived later in the 19th century, impacting local languages and cultures. São Tomé and Príncipe share a similar history of Portuguese colonization and Roman Catholic influence, with Protestantism arriving later through Angolan missionaries. Both countries face challenges related to maintaining authentic Christian practices, addressing social issues, and promoting theological education.
