Abstract

The Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church is projected to be the largest Orthodox church globally by 2050. Originating in the Aksumite Kingdom around 330 CE, the Ethiopian Church has a unique identity rooted in its miaphysite Christology, Old Testament practices, and a strong monastic tradition. The church played a central role in Ethiopian cultural, political, and social life, maintaining its own language (Ge’ez) for religious texts and developing distinctive forms of music, literature, and art. Despite challenges such as communism, ethnic tensions, and engagement in a multi-faith society, the church has been involved in social and development projects, ecumenical dialogues, and promoting peace. Contemporary issues include the need to engage youth, address economic difficulties, and balance traditional practices with modern needs, ensuring its continued relevance in Ethiopia and Sub-Saharan Africa.
