Protestants
Abstract
Protestantism’s arrival is viewed as a “coming home” of Christianity to Africa, building on the continent’s early Christian heritage. African Protestants embrace core Protestant principles while contextualizing their faith within diverse local cultures, leading to variations in practice across communities and countries. Mission-instituted churches, originating from European and North American missionary activities in the 18th and 19th centuries, have significantly shaped the Protestant landscape. Today, Protestant churches are found across the continent, contributing to education, healthcare, and social justice while grappling with issues such as ethnic divisions, cultural relevance, and engagement in ecumenical dialogue.
