Roman Catholics
Abstract
The Second Vatican Council and the decolonization of Africa serve as key defining features that have shaped contemporary African Catholicism. The empowerment of the laity and the introduction of vernacular liturgy have revitalized Catholic organizations and liturgical celebrations. Despite its growth, the Church faces challenges related to inculturation, relations with other religious traditions, and its role in addressing social justice and human rights in the context of post-colonial Africa. The church’s ability to balance its traditions with the needs of local communities will determine its continued influence in the region.
