Faith and Culture
Abstract
African Independent Churches (AICs) emerged as a response to the condemnation of African cultural practices, highlighting their role in developing a culturally relevant form of Christianity. Inculturation balanced gospel teachings with cultural values. There is a need to discover biblically-based substitutes for traditional rites of passage that were abandoned because of Christian influence. Faith is needed to be integrated with cultural identity, reflecting the perspectives of African church leaders on the compatibility of Christianity and African culture.
