A Demographic Profile of Christianity in North Africa and West Asia
Abstract
The majority religion in the North Africa-West Asia region is Islam, which represents 92% as of 2015. Despite their long history, both Christianity and Judaism have declined over the past century, due largely to inter-religious and social conflicts. Exceptions to this trend include the Christian-majority countries of Armenia (94% Christian), Georgia (86% Christian), and Cyprus (71% Christian). Political struggles in Syria and Iraq have been the cause of considerable suffering and emigration for Christians. Christians now constitute only 5.2% of the region’s total population; of these, 75% are Orthodox.
