Christian Media
Abstract
Christians in North Africa and West Asia use modern media technologies to spread their faith over a broader geographic area and to younger generations, to establish their identity and presence in the face of growing Islamism, and to spirituality nourish diaspora communities. Print, radio, and television are most commonly used, with social and digital media playing a secondary role. Christian media outlets have smaller budgets and influence than their Muslim counterparts. Nevertheless, there are around 25 Christian satellite television channels in the region broadcasting a range of denominational, ecumenical, and/or evangelistic content that typically focuses on messages of forgiveness and hope. To remain effective, Christian media will need to remain up-to-date with emerging social media technologies, interactively engage with digital audiences, and navigate the financial and security challenges of media production as an often-persecuted minority.
