Mainland China (Catholic)
Abstract
The Catholic Church in China faces a complex and multifaceted reality marked by historical tensions, political dynamics, and internal divisions. The legacy of colonialism and foreign influence has shaped perceptions of the Church, leading to the establishment of the Chinese Catholic Patriotic Association (CCPA). The Church has experienced steady growth and renewal, driven by the Second Vatican Council's reforms, the emergence of a new generation of leaders, and initiatives in social service, cultural dialogue, and spirituality. The future of the Catholic Church in China hinges on its ability to bridge internal divisions, shed its "foreign" image, and meaningfully engage with Chinese culture and society.
