Macau
Abstract
The history of Christianity in Macau is intertwined with Portuguese colonialism, the Catholic Church's missionary efforts, and the dynamics of religious change in the region. The arrival of Portuguese traders and Catholic missionaries in the 16th century marked the beginning of Christian presence in Macau, with the city serving as a base for missionary work in China and the broader Far East. Protestant missions arrived later in the 19th century, leading to the establishment of various denominations, but their growth has been more limited. The contemporary Christian community in Macau faces challenges related to attracting young people amidst a gambling-driven economy and adapting to the changing demographics of the city.
