ʿ Allāma Ṭabāṭabāʾī and Exegetical Hadiths in al-Mīzān: A Contemporary Imāmī Commentary on Hadith?
Abstract
This chapter brings to light the exegetical work of Muḥammad Ḥusayn ṬabÄá¹abÄʾī (d. 1981), a paragon of modern Shi‘i thought in twentieth-century Iran. In his Qur’an commentary al-Má¿‘zÄn he devoted a section to hadith discussion. Nafisi examines how ṬabÄá¹abÄʾī assesses the authority of a given hadith by paying particular attention to the matn of the hadith and its relationship to the Qur’an. This opens the possibility of intertextual and comparative work that crosses the boundaries between sharḥ al-ḥadÄ«th and tafsÄ«r al-QurʾÄn.
