Abstract

The rebuilding of Herat is the focus of Chapter 9. Early Mongol initiatives are noted, however, serious development inside Herat began under Fakhr al-D?n Kart. He defied Mongol proscriptions on construction in Herat. He built commercial spaces (bazaars and caravansarais) and developed public spaces. Fakhr al-D?n Kart’s brother, Ghiy?th al-D?n Kart, flush with tax-exemptions, cash, and plunder following his victories over the Chaghataids, invested in construction projects. Development of religious-charitable spaces (hospices, mosques, etc.) and economic spaces (bazaars, etc.) are itemized in Appendix 3, “Urban Development in the Kartid Period.”
