Steve Chibnall, Lost Star: The Life and Loves of Belinda Lee
Abstract
In the book's final section, on the digital age, the range of forms covered is particularly diverse, including works by artist-filmmakers John Smith and Chris Leslie, as well as Steve McQueen's Grenfell (2021) and the more 'traditional' housing film Dispossession: The Great British Housing Swindle (Paul Sng, 2017).As Rodger concludes, 'there is still much work to be done in film archives across the country to broaden the awareness of the extent and reach of the housing film' (226); his book is an admirable contribution to this key subject. He argues in his introduction that 'the residential is political' (4), and succeeds in demonstrating that it is also much more than that in this wide-ranging and stimulating book.An unfortunate feature of the book is the number of typos in the pdf version provided for review, presumably a result of automated processes -including 'Jons Ivens, the famous Dutch documentarian' (41), later cited as 'Jans Ivens' (125) and 'Jon Ivens' (237), but never correctly as 'Joris Ivens'; elsewhere, there is also mention of the music duo the Slateford Mods (215), as opposed to the Sleaford Mods.
