Spielarten des Narrativen
Abstract
Intermedialität und Narrativität in Hugo von Hofmannsthals (Tanz-)Pantomimen This article examines Hugo von Hofmannsthal's Amor und Psyche (1911) and Das fremde Mädchen (1911) as exemplary cases of modernist dance pantomimes that critically reflect the boundaries between literature, theatre, dance and text.Situating Hofmannsthal's works within the early twentieth-century revival of pantomime, it argues that his pantomime texts written for/with Grete Wiesenthal can be seen as an autonomous, intermedial, and narrative genre rather than as mere scripts for performance.Drawing on theories of intermediality and transgeneric narratology, the study explores how Hofmannsthal's pantomimes create diegetic spaces, narrative structures, mediating instances and focalization techniques that contribute to the epicisation of the hybrid pantomimic text.In so doing, the article shows how Hofmannsthal's modernist dance pantomime rethinks the relationship between language, body and storytelling and plays with the narrative affordances of their textual medium.
