Polnischer Postkolonialismus als Instrument der politischen Rechten?
Abstract
The aim of this article is to critically analyse academic texts that examine the use of postcolonial theory in the Polish context as a supposed instrument of conservative, right-wing or even nationalist forces. Some scholars have even written about the nationalist appropriation of postcolonial studies. This argument is most frequently put forward in connection with the views of Professor Ewa Thompson, a pioneer in the application of postcolonialism in the Eastern European context. There are a number of errors in these texts, such as the confusion between academic and journalistic discourse. This discourse can be categorised as Westplaining for several reasons, primarily because the accusations of nationalism, essentialism and ‚Polonocentrism' are completely detached from the Polish historical context and presented from a Western perspective. In the case of Poland, the problems in defining a national identity are a direct result of colonial trauma, which Western researchers seem to completely overlook. To analyse this phenomenon, Jadwiga Staniszkis idea of asymmetries of rationality will be combined with the question of Western academics' criticism of the Polish application of postcolonialism in order to examine whether, paradoxically, it is not an expectation of the subalterns to speak in the epistemic model of the hegemon.
