Abstract

The Willdenow herbarium, a historical collection kept at the Botanic Garden and Botanical Museum Berlin (B), includes 221 specimens collected by J. J. Houtou de Labillardière, mainly in Australia in the years 1792 and 1793. These are duplicates from the collector's original herbarium, which is now integrated in the Webb herbarium kept at the Museo di Storia Naturale in Florence; this collection contains Labillardière's extensive original material. Currently accepted names for all specimens in the Willdenow herbarium gathered by Labillardière are listed together with miscellaneous notes and selected photographs of living plants. Several fragments from Labillardière's set of specimens in the Willdenow herbarium found their way into the Halle herbarium (HAL); they are also dealt with here. Additionally, Labillardière's Novae Hollandiae plantarum specimen, in which the names of numerous Australian plants new to science were validly published, and Willdenow's Species plantarum, which contains many references to the former work, are set into the context of their time.
