Ice segregation efficiency model of frost heave in saline soils
Abstract
Arakawa's theory of frost heave is extended in order to apply it to saline soils. When the ice segregation efficiency E is a constant the model can be solved analytically. When E is not constant, solutions are obtained numerically after making several approximations applicable to short laboratory soil columns. Comparison of the model results is made with several step-freezing experiments in which the heave and water intake were measured, as well as the temperature, pore pressure and salinity profiles.
