Abstract

The poetic discourse of Mahmoud Darwish constitutes a mercurial universe within which meanings orbit visions, and where styles and ideas fuse in its depths, shaping the poet’s intentions, purposes, desires, and aspirations that he seeks to convey to the reader. Among the stylistic configurations he adopts to express his concerns and those of his society- since the human being is a product of his environment- is the combination of the declarative and the injunctive modes. Through this combination, he seeks to merge reality with artistic creativity, proclaiming and affirming the fragmentation and rupture experienced by a people under brutal Zionist colonization. This is what the present study aims to reveal and clarify by examining the declarative style (negation) and the injunctive, request-based style.
