Evaluation and Comparison of Ozone Gel as an Adjunct to Scaling and Root Planing (SRP) versus SRP Alone for the Non-surgical Treatment of Periodontitis: A Randomized Controlled Clinical Trial
Abstract
Ozone possesses immunomodulatory, analgesic, antihypoxic, detoxifying, and antimicrobial properties. Given the critical role of bacterial biofilms in the pathogenesis of periodontal inflammation, ozone has been suggested as a local drug delivery agent to be used as an adjunct to mechanical non-surgical periodontal therapy for improved clinical outcomes. Thus, the objecitve of this study was to evaluate and compare the efficacy of ozone gel as an adjunct to scaling and root planing (SRP) with that of SRP alone in the non-surgical management of Stage I and Stage II periodontitis. This single-center, randomized, split-mouth clinical study was conducted with a sample size of 15 participants. Individuals presenting with bilateral periodontal sites, with at least one site in each quadrant exhibiting a probing depth of 4–7 mm, were included in the study. Test and control sites were randomly allocated right before the procedure. Clinical parameters, including the gingival index, plaque index, modified sulcular bleeding index, pocket probing depth, and clinical attachment level, were assessed at baseline, 1 month, and 3 months. Intergroup Comparison of different parameters between the 2 groups showed statistically significant differences (p value
