Abstract

The cultivation of dates is increasingly embraced by numerous countries, both as an essential fruit crop and to enhance food security, particularly in regions facing extreme environmental challenges, such as the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) nations. The GCC countries hold a competitive edge in producing and exporting high-quality dates. This interest is further driven by increasing international demand for date fruit and products. To capitalize on this competitive advantage, it is essential to identify, gather, and compile a basic data set on production inputs and outputs to boost harvests and elevate the quality of date fruits. Data concerning climate, soil, water, crops, nutrients, and management from various experiments conducted by different institutions in selected date-producing countries, including GCC ones, must be aggregated. Analyzing these data sets will facilitate critical evaluations of crop performance, aiding the generalization and application of research outcomes to real-world decision-making. This article covers strategies to enhance production, quality, and economic viability of date fruits through optimal water and fertilizer usage. The concepts presented aim to act as a catalyst for improving date fruit quality and production, thus fortifying long-term food and nutrition security. It is anticipated that this will foster further collaborative research and influence future policy development and strategic initiatives in date-producing countries, particularly within the GCC, by documenting insights from evidence-based experiments and experience.
