Abstract

This is a cross sectional hospital based descriptive study to identify the risk factors associated with end stage renal failure (ESRF) in Sudanese patients. We studied 245 ESRF patients on regular haemodialysis treatment from Khartoum, Aljazeera and Northern state/Sudan. After informed consent, clinical data were obtained retrospectively from medical records and by using structured questionnaire. The results showed that 55.5% of our patients were male and 80% were unemployed and the most common cause of ESRF in our patients was hypertension (45.7%) followed by diabetes mellitus (15.1%), obstructive uropathy (11.02%), chronic glomerulonephritis (5.3%), autosomal dominant poly cystic kidney disease (ADPKD) (2.4 %), however, in (20.4 %) no cause was found, with patients from rural area significantly more than those from urban area (P value = 0,017). The results also show the risk of ESRF in patients with DM is significantly higher (P value = 0.038) in the age group more than 50 years compared with age group less than 50 years old. The data of present study suggest that, hypertension and DM are the most common risk factors of ESRF among our population.
