Pulmonary embolism in family physician practice
Abstract
Pulmonary embolism (PE) represents acute occlusion of pulmonary artery branches by thrombotic masses, leading to impaired lung blood flow, gas exchange disorders, and consequently hemodynamic disturbances and potentially fatal right ventricular failure. This condition is characterized by high prevalence and mortality. The peak incidence occurs in older adults, however, PE in younger patients requires special attention due to its atypical nature, frequent delayed diagnosis, and specific risk factors. The article discusses key etiological factors, features of clinical manifestations, and modern methods of diagnostics and treatment of PE in young patients, emphasizing the importance of identifying the cause of thrombosis for secondary prevention of this condition.
