Training Methods for Executives in the Oil and Gas Industry: Responding to the Challenges of Modern Times
Abstract
The oil and gas industry is undergoing profound transformations that require a fundamental rethinking of approaches to developing managerial competencies. Rising demands for sustainable development, accelerating digitalization, the energy transition, and a severe shortage of qualified personnel are shaping a new paradigm of corporate training within the sector. This article provides a comprehensive analysis of current methods for training executives at oil and gas enterprises, covering both traditional approaches (mentoring, modular learning, case studies) and innovative technologies (VR/AR simulators, digital twins, machine learning). The study identifies key challenges: a workforce shortage of around 40,000 professionals in the Russian sector, the need to develop digital competencies in 60% of managers, and the integration of ESG principles into management practices. It also examines advanced educational initiatives of leading companies, including corporate universities, remote learning platforms, and leadership development programs. A conceptual model of adaptive executive training is proposed, taking into account generational differences, industrial safety requirements, and strategic priorities of the energy transition. The study’s findings can be used to enhance corporate training programs and inform government policy in workforce development for the fuel and energy sector.
