THE ROLE OF BLUE CARBON IN ACHIEVING A SUSTAINABLE ENVIRONMENT
Abstract
Blue carbon" refers to the carbon dioxide absorbed and stored in coastal and marine ecosystems, including mangroves, salt marshes, and seagrasses. These ecosystems play a pivotal role in mitigating climate change by sequestering carbon at rates significantly higher than terrestrial forests, while also providing co-benefits such as biodiversity conservation, coastal protection, and support for local economies. This research paper explores the mechanisms of blue carbon sequestration, its contributions to sustainable development goals (SDGs), and the challenges posed by human activities and environmental degradation.Drawing on global assessments, it highlights how blue carbon ecosystems can offset greenhouse gas emissions, enhance resilience to climate impacts, and generate economic incentives through conservation and restoration efforts. The paper argues that integrating blue carbon into international climate policies, such as those under the Paris Agreement and REDD+ frameworks, is essential for achieving a sustainable environment.Strategies for protection, including community-based management and carbon trading markets, are discussed, emphasizing the need for international cooperation to maximize benefits. With potential economic gains estimated at up to $136.34 million by 2030 from enhanced sequestration, blue carbon represents a nature-based solution that addresses climate, Neeraj K.
