Abstract

The enterprise API landscape is undergoing a profound transformation, driven by the rise of Agentic AI and the need for seamless agent-to-agent communication.Model Context Protocol (MCP) servers are emerging as the natural evolution of API management, enabling organizations to expose domain capabilities to agents, humans, and large language models (LLMs).This article explores how MCP is poised to become the de facto standard for integrations, outlines the operating model, and discusses why API offices must govern MCP adoption. We examine MCP's role in top-down API strategy and bottom-up transformation, accelerating capability mapping and evolving products into programmable platforms. The article concludes with an evaluation of MCP's impact, future directions, and references to related work.[1][3][9].
