Hahn-Steinthal fracture treated with Herbert screws : Prospective study of 9 cases with review of the literature
Abstract
Hahn-Steinthal fractures are rare and often overlooked. Early initial management is crucial due to the relatively high complication rate. We report nine cases of type I capitellum fractures treated with Herbert screw fixation. Between 2019 and 2025, we selected nine patients (six men and three women) with a mean age of 25.8 years (range 18–40 years). The mean follow-up was two years (range 1–3 years). Clinical outcomes were assessed using the Mayo Clinic Elbow Performance Score (MEPS). The mean range of motion was 135° (range 105–150°) in flexion/extension and 161° (range 150–175°) in pronation/supination. The mean MEPS score was 90.6 points, with seven excellent results and one good result. The aim of this study was to highlight the good results of the Herbert screw fixation technique in the management of Hahn-Steinthal fractures.
