Leveraging the Duality Theorem for Analysis of District-Wise Agriculture Data in India
Abstract
Duality theory offers a robust analytical framework for optimizing resource utilization in agriculture, particularly in resource-constrained contexts such as India. This study applies the principles of duality through linear programming to enhance district-level crop production, utilizing real-world agricultural datasets from ICRISAT. The primal model is formulated to maximize crop yields, while the corresponding dual model seeks to minimize resource costs, incorporating key constraints such as land availability and labor supply. Optimization models were developed and solved using Python’s PuLP library, with a focus on rice production. Due to the absence of economic attributes in the original dataset, synthetic cost and profit variables were incorporated to enable a preliminary economic analysis, a recognized limitation of the study. The resulting dual variables provide valuable insights into the marginal value of critical resources, supporting more efficient and equitable allocation strategies. Importantly, this optimization framework aligns with sustainability goals by promoting resource-efficient agricultural practices that can enhance productivity while conserving limited inputs. Although the results demonstrate the potential of dualitybased optimization in agricultural planning, the interpretation of dual outputs for policymaking remains limited by the lack of authentic economic data. The study highlights the need for integrating accurate and comprehensive economic indicators to support evidence-based policy development and sustainable resource management. These findings establish a foundation for future research aimed at improving farm-level decision-making and district-level planning, contributing to more resilient and sustainable agricultural systems in India.
