A Simplified Enumeration Strategy for Understanding LCM and GCF
Abstract
Understanding the Least Common Multiple (LCM) and Greatest Common Factor (GCF) is essential in elementary mathematics, yet many students struggle with traditional methods due to excessive listing and memorization. This study presents a simplified enumeration strategy composed of the Ascending Multiple Check Method for LCM and the Descending Factor Check Method for GCF. These methods emphasize logical starting points, directional checking, and early termination rather than exhaustive listing or prime factorization. We suggest that the approach is particularly effective for young and novice learners by promoting efficiency, simplicity, and logical reasoning.
