Abstract

Artificial intelligence delivers instant, perfectly structured responses to student queries, creating challenges educators struggle to name: when AI already has the perfect answer, what should we teach? How can we help students push beyond AI's seductively complete responses? This guide argues that the outline itself—AI's organizational structure—is the optimal pedagogical intervention point because it's where AI's epistemological choices become visible, where student agency can be reclaimed, and where teachers' existing rhetoric expertise directly applies. We identify and analyze the ten most common AI outline types (definition-explanation, comparative, pros-and-cons, process, historical-causal, and five others). Once teachers and students learn to recognize these recurring patterns, what appeared to be complete answers reveal themselves as structural choices—starting points for inquiry, not destinations. For each outline type, we provide recognition criteria, analysis of what the structure makes visible and invisible, and five "critical perturbation questions" that move students off AI's map and into genuine thinking. Implementation appendices include scripts for addressing student resistance and a self-assessment rubric rewarding structural awareness.
