Indigenous Data Foundations - a learning partnership
Abstract
The Indigenous Data Foundations Learning Partnership brings together NEESFF organisations, the ARDC, and leading Indigenous data experts to build the foundational capability, guidance, and governance structures needed to support Indigenous Data Sovereignty and Indigenous Data Governance across Australia’s national research infrastructures. This Indigenous-led learning partnership, delivered by the University of Sydney, the Indigenous Data Alliance and NEESFF will provide partners with the knowledge and tools required to begin implementing the CARE and MnW Principles and managing Indigenous data appropriately. Learning partners will be supported by the Indigenous-led project team alongside Australian and international subject matter experts. An Australian Indigenous Data Governance Committee will provide cultural governance, oversight, and direction to ensure the work aligns with Indigenous rights and expectations within Australia. The project will: * Provide access to Indigenous Data subject matter experts, enabling Learning Partners to build staff capability in Indigenous Data Sovereignty and Indigenous Data Governance. * Develop an Indigenous Cultural and Intellectual Property (ICIP) protocol toolkit, and deliver ICIP training tailored to the needs of the environmental and earth sciences sector. * Review Learning Partners’ current policies, processes, and protocols relating to Indigenous data, including metadata practices and provide clear recommendations and resources to strengthen governance, cultural safety, and alignment with CARE and MnW principles.
