Abstract

Abstract In biological applications of plasmas, strong bactericidal effects with low residual toxicity are expected from bactericidal species derived from tryptophan. Lifetimes and bactericidal rates of both tryptophan-derived and pyrrole-derived bactericidal species are evaluated as a function of the solution temperature. The tryptophan-derived and pyrrole-derived bactericidal species were similar, and the results revealed that the pyrrole ring significantly contributes to the production of bactericidal species in oxygen-radical irradiated tryptophan solutions. Their bactericidal lifetimes to species are different, estimating activation energies to be approximately 39 kJ mol −1 for the tryptophan solution and 68 kJ mol −1 for the pyrrole solution.
