Politica e devozioni in Brasile nella prima metà del Novecento: gli strumenti della cooperazione tra Chiesa e Stato
Abstract
This paper analyzes three emblematic events in the relationship between Church and State in early 20th-century Brazil: the proclamation of Our Lady of Aparecida as national patroness, the inauguration of the Christ the Redeemer statue, and the Eucharistic Congresses. These initiatives reflect an ecclesiastical strategy aimed at reinforcing Catholicism’s role as a guarantor of social cohesion. Through symbols and devotions, the Church positioned itself as the nation’s moral guide, in line with the papal project to restore a Christian order in public life.
