Abstract

Since ancient times, environmental considerations have been taken into account in the environmental design of buildings. To ensure architects remain committed to serving their environment, this research aims to provide a method for testing and evaluating the solar exposure efficiency of glass spaces during winter. This research is the second phase of a series of studies focused on climate design, ultimately aiming to develop a computer program that addresses all aspects of a building's climate design. Designers input variables into the computer and receive a series of possible climate-efficient designs. Depending on the design phase, designers can then select the most suitable design based on its responsiveness to other, non-climatic design requirements. This research series is not limited to a specific location and can be applied anywhere. The climatic conditions and geographical location or latitude are determined according to the program inputs. Research No. (A) in this series addressed the effect of window design on the indoor environment in summer. Research No. (2), which we are discussing, addressed testing the efficiency of solar exposure of a window in winter, based on the relationship between the area of the glass opening, its shape, and its depth of reflection.
