Quantum Computing and the Internet of Things: Constraints, Opportunities and a Strategic Roadmap
Abstract
Quantum computing offers promising novel paradigms for information processing, yet its integration into resource-constrained Internet of Things environments introduces severe architectural tradeoffs. While the theoretical capabilities of quantum algorithms are well documented, deploying these technologies across distributed IoT networks is limited by hardware constraints, network latency, and interoperability challenges. This article contributes a critical analysis of these limitations across the functional layers of IoT systems. We evaluate the practical viability of quantum sensing, networking, and machine learning at the edge, alongside the immediate requirement to deploy Post-Quantum Cryptography on memory-constrained microcontrollers. Finally, we establish a strategic research roadmap organized across three distinct time horizons. By outlining the progression from near-term cryptographic mitigation and hybrid cloud orchestration to long-term vision of decentralized quantum machine learning, we transition the discourse on quantum IoT integration from speculative capabilities to the concrete engineering challenges that must be resolved to realize a quantum-enabled IoT ecosystem.
