A Survey of Large Language Models in Education: Perspectives from Students and Teachers
Abstract
Large Language Models (LLMs) have become powerful tools capable of generating coherent text, answering complex questions, and performing multi-step reasoning across diverse applications, including natural language understanding, content generation, automated reasoning, and multimodal interactions. It has become increasely popular in educational context to provide education support for teachers and students. LLM in education can improve instructional effectiveness and learning outcomes. In this survey, we provide a comprehensive overview of how large language models (LLMs) are being applied in education, focusing on their roles in supporting both students and teachers. For students, we discuss applications such as answering questions, providing personalized learning guidance, correcting mistakes, and helping learners understand difficult concepts. For teachers, we highlight tools that assist with generating questions, grading assignments, and creating educational materials. By presenting these applications in a clear and structured way, this survey aims to show how LLMs can improve learning outcomes, reduce teachers' workload, and make educational experiences more engaging and effective for all learners.
