Abstract

Modern distributed systems operate across complex parallel and hierarchical structures, requiring precise coordination among numerous and operating under dynamic conditions, uncertainties, and evolving goals. Traditional modeling and analysis approaches lack the expressiveness needed to fully represent the interwoven structural and behavioral complexities, compromising system correctness, efficiency, and scalability. To address these challenges, we introduce ScopeNet, a framework for the modeling, analysis, and quality assurance of complex systems using Hierarchical Parallel Petri Nets. ScopeNet introduces a systematic approach to modeling both hierarchical and parallel interactions, while seamlessly integrating qualitative verification and real-time quality monitoring. Unlike existing frameworks, ScopeNet unifies multiple Petri net formalisms, enabling consistent modeling and comprehensive analysis of diverse system behaviors. We validate ScopeNet's effectiveness through a standard Petri net benchmark and a real-world case study, demonstrating its ability to model complex interactions, analyze system behaviors, and ensure quality requirements in selfadaptive systems. By bridging hierarchical design with rigorous analysis capabilities, ScopeNet supports the development of reliable, large-scale systems in dynamic environments.
