CONTRIBUTIONS OF BEHAVIORAL NUTRITION TO THE MENTAL HEALTH OF BARIATRIC PATIENTS: INTEGRATIVE LITERATURE REVIEW
Abstract
Introduction: Obesity is a chronic and multifactorial condition; bariatric surgery is effective for weight loss, but it can have emotional repercussions and nutritional deficiencies. Objective: To investigate, through an integrative review, the contributions of Behavioral Nutrition to the mental health of bariatric patients. Methods: Search in PubMed, SciELO, BVS and Google Scholar (last 5 years; Portuguese, English and Spanish); seven studies; theoretical basis in cognitive-behavioral models. Results: Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy, mindful eating, psychoeducation and motivational interviewing improved dietary adherence, emotional regulation and prevention of postoperative disorders. Deficiencies in B vitamins, vitamin D and iron were associated with emotional changes, indicating a need for monitoring. Conclusion: Integrating Behavioral Nutrition strategies with micronutrient screening and correction enhances bariatric outcomes, promoting emotional balance, weight loss maintenance and continuous multidisciplinary care.
