ENHANCED METHOD FOR POWER QUALITY IMPROVEMENT IN DSTATCOM-BASED SEIG APPLICATIONS
Abstract
Self-excited induction generators (SEIGs) are widely preferred in wind energy systems, especially in off-grid areas. The main problem of SEIGs is their poor voltage regulation, which includes both voltage drop and overshoot depending on varying load conditions. To overcome this issue, distribution static compensator (DSTATCOM) is an important alternative. DSTATCOM incorporates a voltage source converter (VSC) regulated according to reactive power demand. The generation of switching signals for the VSC requires the determination of a precise reference signal derived from the measured SEIG voltages and load currents. However, harmonic distortions in these measurements — particularly under unbalanced or nonlinear loads — necessitate distortion suppression to ensure accurate reference signal synthesis. In literature, several techniques for DSTATCOM control have been introduced. Among these algorithms, current synchronous detection (CSD) algorithm draws attention with its simple structure. In this study, a delayed signal cancellation (DSC)-based CSD control algorithm is suggested. The suggested method is tested using MATLAB/Simulink software under nonlinear, unbalanced, and dynamic loads and in the presence of DC-offset. The results demonstrate that the THD values in currents and voltages are below the IEEE-519-2014 standard limits thanks to the suggested DSC-based CSD control method.
