Os efeitos do Brexit na Irlanda do Norte
Abstract
The present study investigates the impacts of Brexit in Northern Ireland, analyzing the political and sociocultural transformations resulting from this event. Grounded in the New Regionalism approach, the work examines how the United Kingdom's exit from the European Union rekindled historical divisions between unionists and nationalists, affecting regional identity and political stability. The methods used were qualitative and documentary analysis, the research considers academic sources, population censuses and political agreements such as The Good Friday Agreement and the Northern Ireland Protocol. The results indicate that Brexit accelerated changes already underway, weakening unionism and strengthening Irish nationalism, culminating in Sinn Féin's victory in the 2022 elections. In addition, the study demonstrates that Northern Ireland is progressively leaning towards European regionalism, valuing its connection with the European Union and the Republic of Ireland. As a future implication, the possibility of a referendum on the reunification of the island is discussed. The study contributes to the debate on subnational identities and the relevance of regionalism in contexts of political transition.
