Abstract

This study compares the efficiency of two gating systems for sand casting of AK18 alloy (Al—18 % Si) modified with 1 % carbon in the form of fullerenes contained in shungite rock. The effect of an elbow riser passing through two mould halves on cleaning the alloy of non-metallic inclusions and preserving the modifying effect of the fullerenes is studied. It is shown that a gating system with a cranked riser ensures effective contaminant removal and does not negatively impact the morphology of silicon in the alloy.
