Abstract

The present study aims to analyze the international guidelines of the United Nations aimed at the inclusion of women in the context of sustainable development between 1987 and 1995. It seeks to understand how international documents incorporated gender issues into environmental and development agendas and their applications in education for the twenty-first century. The adopted methodology is based on the capacity development approach (Lopes, 2005). The analyzes indicate a recognition of women as key agents in achieving sustainable development, albeit marked by persistent ambiguities. It was found that women’s education is presented as a strategic instrument for expanding individual, institutional, and social capacities, however, guidelines, especially those related to women’s training for the labor market, tend to reproduce capitalist and colonial logics, thereby limiting effective advances in gender equality.
