THE DESIGN OF FLOOD RESILIENT HOUSES IN ASSAM, KERELA, AND BIHAR
Abstract
What is the issue with the way flooding is managed in India today and why does housing fail the same communities every year? Floods are very common in states like Kerala, Bihar, and Assam. They happen regularly and cause loss of life, destruction of homes, and long-term disruption. Once the damage has been done, emergency relief and makeshift shelters have been the standard reaction. Although this is beneficial in the near run, it does not lower risk in the long run. Consequently, the same regions are repeatedly rebuilt in hazardous situations. Instead of viewing housing as a post-disaster remedy, this project views housing as a long-term solution. Depending on local conditions, it suggests three flood-resistant housing solutions. Elevated stilt houses in Assam enable floodwater to flow underneath the structure. Using buoyant foundations based on Archimedean principles, amphibious dwellings in Bihar stay grounded under normal circumstances and rise during floods. Housing in Kerala is elevated above ground. It is supported by drainage systems instead of floating foundations due to flooding, severe rains, and dense population. Each strategy is influenced by the building methods, materials, and climate of the area.
