Abstract

The Indian aviation has turned out to be a cemetery to airlines. Kingfisher, Jet Airways and Air Deccan just disappeared with debts amounting to 1.4billion, 3billion and 300 million respectively. However, this brutal market has been dominated by IndiGo- which was launched in August 2006. By September 2024, IndiGo is controlling 61.6 percent of the domestic market in India operating fleet of 367 aircraft. Although the airline has been experiencing losses in the COVID-19 pandemic (FY2020-2023), it has shown impressive resilience and as of FY2024, it has regained its profitability reporting net profits and revenues of 8,171 crores and 68,537 crores, respectively. In this paper, we will discuss how IndiGo has managed to develop a repeatable competitive advantage based on operation discipline that has not been replicated by other competitors despite transparency. Using the primary financial data that covers the FY2006-2024, we can see that three mechanisms were identified: fleet standardization which generates cost leadership, turnaround optimization which generates asset utilization, and the revolutionary sale-and-leaseback model which is a source of capital efficiency. The results of our analysis of four competitor failures in four airline companies (Kingfisher, Jet Airways, SpiceJet, and Air Deccan) demonstrate the reasons why partial model adoption does not work. The recent change of IndiGo such as the introduction of business class in the end of 2024 is a strategic adaptation, although it retained the main principles of operations that allowed it to revive after the pandemic when other competitors failed.
