Resveratrol improves cognitive function and quality of life in postmenopausal women
Abstract
OBJECTIVE: Aim: To evaluate the effect of trans-resveratrol on cognitive function and quality of life in postmenopausal women. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Materials and Methods: A prospective controlled clinical study involved 88 women aged 52.1±2.5 years, postmenopausal for 2.3±1.2 years, who were randomized into two groups: study (n=55) and comparison (n=33). All patients underwent laboratory and psychometric examinations. RESULTS: Results: Compared with the control group, resveratrol intake was associated with an increase in serum magnesium levels (p 0.05). Resveratrol administration in the study group resulted in positive changes in cognitive function (P0.05). Improvements in quality of life according to the EQ-5D-3L scale occurred in both groups, but with an advantage in the study group (p 0.05). CONCLUSION: Conclusions: The results of the study indicate a significant positive effect of resveratrol on cognitive functioning, as confirmed by an increase in MoCA scores, as well as an improvement in quality-of-life parameters according to the EQ-5D-3L and MENQOL questionnaires. The data obtained provide grounds for asserting that resveratrol can help slow age-related cognitive decline in postmenopausal women.
