Abstract

This article provides a comprehensive analysis of the evolution of the Russian auto insurance market, focusing on the dynamics of two key segments – compulsory motor third-party liability insurance (OSAGO) and voluntary comprehensive motor insurance (CASCO) – during the significant economic transformations of recent years. The study goes beyond a simple comparison of statistical data, offering an in-depth examination of the mechanisms that shape consumer behavior in times of financial instability and recovery. The central focus of the study is the ratio of OSAGO to CASCO policy volumes, which is interpreted as a sensitive macroeconomic indicator. The article demonstrates how this ratio changes regularly and predictably depending on the phase of the economic cycle. Through the prism of this ratio, a shift in policyholders’ priorities is revealed: from forced savings on voluntary insurance during difficult times to a return to comprehensive risk management during the recovery period.
