IMPLEMENTING W. HUMBOLDT’S CONCEPT OF “SCIENCE THROUGH EDUCATION”: RESEARCH UNIVERSITIES FROM THEIR ORIGINS TO THE PRESENT DAY
Abstract
The article examines the processes of establishing the first second-generation universities in Germany and America in the 19th century. It shows that research universities, organized based on Wilhelm von Humboldt’s concept of “science through education,” provided a fertile ground for numerous scientific discoveries in various fields. The implementation of their findings in the real economy ensured Germany and the United States’ dominance in the industrial and technological sectors by the end of the 19th century. Research universities continue to play a leading role in the global higher education system in the 21st century, serving as drivers of innovation, stimulators of national economies, and incubators of the intellectual elite.
