Contemporary approaches to motivating nursing staff in private healthcare: a review of models and implementation constraints
Abstract
The article systematizes contemporary approaches to motivating nursing staff in private healthcare organizations and explains why staff shortages, turnover, and burnout directly undermine service quality and the economic performance of clinics. Based on a review of content and process theories (Maslow, Herzberg, McClelland, Vroom, Adams) and applied models (KPI-based bonuses, job grades, Total Rewards), it highlights their strengths as well as implementation constraints, including measurability of results, the risk of demotivation, issues of fairness, and resource barriers. The paper proposes principles for a hybrid system that combines financial and non-financial incentives, career development, and staff participation in improvement initiatives. It recommends linking payments to patient-oriented indicators and strengthening an internal culture of recognition.
