A Semiotic Analysis of the Political Newspaper Articles’ Headlines on Al-Ahram Newspaper Website: Arab-Israeli Conflict as a Model
Abstract
The current study aimed at analyzing the headlines of political articles by applying them to the Arab-Israeli conflict according to the narrative semiotic approach of the Paris School, especially the procedural tools of Greimas, which included two reading levels: the superficial level and the implicit level to identify the message intended to be conveyed to the reader, by applying them to a deliberate sample; consisting of three articles by several writers. Moreover, the headlines should be indirect and carry symbolic codes and suggestive connotations that need to be interpreted. Based on the theoretical approach to the semiotics of the headline and the semiotic square of Greimas, the study concluded several results, the most prominent of which are: the headlines themselves as an independent structure with a signifier and a signified were implicitly suggestive of the article content, and the headlines reflected the reality of the current Arab-Israeli conflict in their style, narration of their events, and method of expression. In addition, the headlines reflected the significance of the political event related to the conflict, and the writer's political ideology. The book relied on the linguistic use of vocabulary with its various rhetorical mechanisms in a way that achieves the goal of its political discourse.
