Abstract

This paper adopts an artificial intelligence-augmented content analysis approach to critically assess the corporate social responsibility (CSR) endeavors of two large public sector enterprises within Ernakulam District — Cochin Shipyard Ltd (CSL) and BPCL (Kochi Refinery), which fall under the aegis of Bharat Petroleum Corporation Ltd — between the years 2013 and 2025. This research made optimum use of a desk study carried out using publicly available annual reports, sustainability statements, and publicly accessible websites by leveraging AI-powered techniques of text mining and theme clustering to identify key CSR themes, mechanisms, levels of theme disclosure, and visible intervention efforts. Findings show that CSL has been focusing its CSR efforts in the domains of education, health, sanitation, and capacity building through key intervention schemes such as “Ananthakripa” and other designed school and health programs. BPCL (Kochi Refinery), a subsidiary of the BPCL Corp., has been largely focused on community development, education, skill development, Water & Sanitation, and Healthcare through structured partnerships with local government bodies and non-governmental agencies. AI-infused analysis of the matter draws inferences of an evident marked increase in the levels of coherence and intensity of its CSR statements post 2018 in sync with the upscaling of new guidelines for the betterment of public sector CSR, while pointing out the need for more marked impact levels of CSR statements based on key macro-delivery levels. This paper draws inferences of using AI tools to improve levels of visibility and macro-mapping of CSR efforts at publicly recognized enterprises. It culminates by submitting recommendations towards increased community interactions, project-specific budget allocations, and incorporation of mixed-methodology research assessments for measuring macro-social impact levels for Ernakulam District.
