Abstract

The rapid advancement of Artificial Intelligence (AI) has significantly transformed the banking and financial services sector, offering innovative solutions to long-standing challenges in financial inclusion. In spite of extensive policy efforts and technological progress, a substantial segment of the population remains excluded from formal financial systems due to barriers such as limited access, high transaction costs, lack of credit history, and information asymmetry. In this state, AI has emerged as a critical enabler of inclusive banking by enhancing the operational efficiency, improving risk assessment, and facilitating personalized financial services. This paper aims to examine the role of Artificial Intelligence in promoting financial inclusion through banking-led initiatives. The study adopts a descriptive research approach based on secondary data drawn from academic literature, institutional reports, and policy documents. The paper analyzes key AI applications in digital onboarding, alternative credit assessment, risk management, and service delivery, and evaluates their implications for access, affordability, and quality of banking services. It also discusses the challenges and ethical concerns associated with AI adoption, including data privacy, algorithmic bias, and regulatory gaps. The paper concludes that while AI offers a new standard for inclusive banking, its effective implementation requires robust governance frameworks, regulatory oversight, and institutional preparedness to ensure impartial and sustainable financial inclusion.
