Abstract

This paper introduces the Estrophrodite–Androphrodite model of mate selection, proposing that individuals possess latent masculine and feminine psychological polarities operating primarily at unconscious and preconscious levels. These internal potentials—shaped through childhood experiences and early relational interactions—interact with social expectations to influence mate selection and marital dynamics. Drawing on psychological theory, counseling practice, and the Pygmalion effect, the model highlights how unconscious expectations shape partner choice and relational satisfaction. The paper discusses the implications for marital counseling, emphasizing the importance of understanding both conscious and unconscious drivers of relational behavior. By integrating archetypal and psychological perspectives, this conceptual framework provides a practical tool for therapists and counselors to enhance relational understanding and support couples in achieving healthier, more fulfilling partnerships.
